The other day I was turning a piece of 1.250 cold roll 16" to a diameter of .702 for 10 ". I was turning using a live center in tail stock and a 4 jaw chuck. I was getting an .008 difference from end to end. Side note: Before I started this project I put a test bar between centers and verified the tail stock alignment. I lightened up on my cuts and still got the same .008 difference. I decided to check my lathe level being I haven't checked that in awhile. It was out but not much. Adjusted level, verified tail stock alignment, and switched to a 3 jaw chuck. Same results. I then used Rollie's Dads method for aligning lathe. After a couple of hours and a bunch of adjusting I got the lathe aligned using this method. I also went back and checked using SB method for verification and it was perfect. I put my level on the ways just to check and it was out over 2 marks (Machinist Level) I went ahead and set up the work again and took a cut. Now I'm out only .0023 end to end with the middle about .003 out. I am taking about .008 to .010 depth cuts with a feed rate of about .006. What am I missing here or am I asking to much for this set up? I really need the 10" .702 to be very accurate. Side bar: I have tried to offset the tail stock also to correct but still can't get the results I want. I have also tried different cutters. I have about .034 left to turn before I will have to scrap this piece. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or missing. Thanks, Vince

It looks like your tailstock is out of alignment. To test the alignmrnt make up a test bar of mild steel. Put centers in both ends. Set it up on centers. Turn down the middle portion of the bar to 1/8 to 1/4 less than the original diameter. The object is to leave a raised ring on each end of the bar. You will take fine test cuts on these rings. Run the part on centers and take a light cut on both rings. Do not touch the cross feed or compound during the cut. Mike both rings. If the tailstock is properly aligned the diameters will be equal. Adjust the tailstock until the test cuts give equal diameters. A .001 movement f the tailstock will make about .002 difference in the diameter at the tailstock end.
