I was thinking of buying a lathe and ran across a 13" Sheldon. Is Sheldon a good machine? I don't see much info on them, but it looks like well made. Just wondering if I should consider it, or hold out for a South Bend?

Sheldons are very good machines, as long as it's not worn out, you'll be real happy with one. If you have a picture to post it will help evaluate its condition/value.

I would agree with Doug. I have an old circa 1940 something Sheldon Metalmaster lathe that I bought a few years ago. The guy before me had cleaned it up and did an great job of painting it (read better than factory). I has all the original parts except the tool holder (Aloris) belt (synthetic) and motor (I upgraded it to a 3/4 h.p. D.C. w/speed control). It still works great. Runout is next to nothing. The trick to keeping the old iron new is oil. They require regular oiling - simple enough. Sheldon of course, made many machines - some require a fork lift to get into you home. This one fits on bench in the basement and suits my needs well. Hope this was helpful. Ron
